Smart tools for risk-informed
management of Europe’s urban forests

Project objectives

To address growing environmental challenges, TREESURE brings together data, innovation, and local expertise. Our objectives reflect this mission and shape the solutions we are developing.

Enhance local preparedness by improving communication and coordination among responders, risk managers, citizens, and governments through an advanced Decision Support System to strengthen disaster response to falling trees.

Deploy advanced technologies by integrating smart devices such as drones, sensors, and satellites, along with nature-based root anchoring systems, to collect data for better damage prediction and preparation against wind-related threats.

Follow a comprehensive approach to raise awareness of tree-related incidents, balance the risks and opportunities of afforestation, and include trees in local risk and emergency plans.

Enable real-time decision support through continuous monitoring, early warnings, and scenario simulations that improve preparedness and ensure timely, targeted responses to extreme events.

Foster engagement and sustainability by involving citizens and stakeholders in co-created solutions and applying Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment to integrate environmental, economic, and social dimensions.

Case Studies

Our pilot sites in Italy, Spain and Romania reflect diverse climates and challenges, allowing TREESURE to design, test and refine tools for safer, more resilient urban forests.

Case Study – Cecina (Italy)

Coastal forests of ageing pines face drought stress and high visitor pressure, increasing tree-fall risks. TREESURE’s contribution: Delivers monitoring and prediction tools to identify vulnerable trees and prevent accidents.

Case Study – Soria (Spain)

A diverse urban tree population with ageing specimens requires more preventive, data-driven management. TREESURE’s contribution: Provides early-risk detection and updated assessments to support proactive urban forest planning.

Case Study – Brașov (Romania)

Urban and peri-urban forests face risks from extreme weather, pests and root instability. TREESURE’s contribution: Integrates real-time data and smart monitoring to improve warnings and coordinated response.
