Welcome to the TREESURE project

TREESURE: Decision support Tool for Risk Evaluation, management and awarenEsS of tree FailURE Disasters

The TREESURE project (2025–2028) is an EU-funded Horizon Europe initiative dedicated to helping European cities manage their urban forests in a safer and more informed way. Urban trees are essential for climate resilience, biodiversity, shade, and well-being. But as windstorms become stronger and more frequent, the risk of tree-fall and related damage is increasing. TREESURE aims to provide cities with the tools they need to monitor tree health, anticipate risks, and respond more effectively before disasters occur.

From 15–17 October 2025, the project officially kicked off with a three-day meeting in Florence and Cecina (Italy), hosted by the Università degli Studi di Firenze, our project coordinator. The event brought together all 11 partners (universities, research centres, SMEs, NGOs, public authorities, and civil-protection organisations) from Italy, Spain, and Romania. The consortium includes experts in forestry, meteorology, digital technologies, risk management, and communication. Their shared mission: to build safer and more resilient urban forests across Europe.

At the core of TREESURE is a new Decision Support System (DSS) that will help cities understand the condition of their trees and identify risks earlier. The system will combine:

  • Satellite data (from the European Space Agency)
  • Local measurements collected through simple IoT sensors placed in urban areas
  • Nature-based solutions, such as innovative root-anchoring systems designed to prevent tree instability

Together, these tools will support early warning, better planning, and clearer communication with the public, an important step in preventing misinformation and building trust around urban-forest management.

TREESURE will test this system in three pilot regions, each located in a different pedoclimatic zone. Before the pilots begin, each region will undergo a thorough assessment of its environmental, technical, and social needs to ensure that the system is adapted to local realities. Throughout the project, stakeholders (including local authorities, risk managers, field practitioners, and community organisations) will be actively involved. Through co-creation workshops, tabletop games, and hands-on testing of the DSS prototypes, they will help shape the tools and guidelines that TREESURE delivers.

Collaboration is essential to TREESURE’s success. By bringing together diverse perspectives and local knowledge, the project aims not only to develop new technologies but also to ensure they fit seamlessly into real urban-forest management practices. Ultimately, TREESURE will help cities improve early warning, reduce damage, strengthen communication, and increase resilience to natural disasters, making urban forests safer and healthier for everyone.
